Recognizing & Reporting Abuse, Neglect, & Exploitation of Vulnerable Populations

Being able to recognize the signs of abuse, neglect or exploitation of a child, an individual with developmental disabilities, or other vulnerable adult is extremely important in protecting members of our society. Everyone should report signs that indicate a child, an individual with developmental disabilities, or other vulnerable adult may be the victim of abuse, neglect and/or exploitation (maltreatment). Many times, however, signs go unreported. Oftentimes, the witness does not report because they:

  • Did not know how or where to make a report
  • Believe nothing will happen.
  • Feel threatened, afraid or intimidated
  • Did not realize what was happening
  • Did not want to get involved

Making a report can mean life or death for a victim of maltreatment in certain instances. It is not your duty to investigate abuse, neglect or exploitation, but if you have a reasonable suspicion, you should report it.

DDD recently updated Abuse and Neglect requirements and it is now an annual Arizona state-mandated training for caregivers. To ensure you are compliant with DDD policy please follow the steps below:
